FAQ's

What does Refash do?

We are the largest global platform for upcycling- a marketplace showcasing over 180 upcycling brands that transform waste into fashion. Beyond retail, we’re building the largest community of conscious consumers while amplifying stories from brands, founders, and creators through Discover, our online magazine.

What is upcycling?

Upcycling, is the process of transforming unwanted materials into products of higher value, both aesthetically and environmentally, without breaking them down into raw materials.

How is upcycling different from recycling?

Upcycling elevates materials, while recycling degrades them. Most recycling is actually downcycling, where materials lose quality in the process. For example, melting a glass bottle to make a new item is recycling, but directly repurposing it into a lampshade is upcycling- retaining its integrity and extending its life cycle.

What is sustainable fashion?

Sustainable fashion is an approach to clothing, accessories, and footwear that minimizes environmental impact while prioritizing ethical production. It considers every stage of a product’s lifecycle- from material sourcing and manufacturing to reuse, repair, and upcycling- ensuring fashion leaves a positive footprint.

Why are upcycled products so expensive?

Upcycled products are not mass produced, they are thoughtfully made with an ethical approach that values quality over quantity. Several factors contribute to their higher price point:

  • Unlike factory made fast fashion, upcycled products are often handcrafted by artisans and skilled makers, requiring hours of detailed work to transform discarded materials into something new and valuable.
  • Unlike conventional fashion brands that source bulk fabrics, upcycling relies on pre-existing materials, which can be inconsistent in supply, requiring extra effort to curate, clean, and repurpose creatively.
  • Upcycled fashion is produced in small batches or as one of a kind pieces, making them more exclusive. Unlike fast fashion, which relies on economies of scale, upcycled brands focus on thoughtful, slow production rather than mass manufacturing.
  • From fair wages to zero-waste processes, upcycled brands prioritize ethical production, ensuring that both the environment and the people behind the products are treated with respect.
  • Upcycled pieces are designed to last. They are better constructed, more durable, and hold a unique story unlike fast fashion, which is built for short-term wear and disposal.
