Our picks for May - TED Talks

The world of fashion is constantly changing, especially now, as consumers get more educated about the reality of fast fashion and over consumption. There are some people and organisations that are at the forefront of driving this change. We have curated a list of TED Talks for May, featuring some of these individuals and their progressive thoughts on sustainability, repurposing, slow fashion & conscious consumption. 

How to change the world by fashion consumption - Jochen Strähle

About the talk: 

Jochen Strähle talks about how consumers are not aware about the negative impact of sustainability within the fashion sector. He talks about the need for systematic change within the fashion industry, identifying that consumers are the key driver for this change / development. His talk gives overall solutions and guidelines how each person can contribute to this change.

You are what you wear - Dr. Christina Dean

About the talk: 

Dr. Christina Dean is the Founder and CEO of Redress, an NGO with a mission to promote environmental sustainability in the fashion industry. She identifies the need to produce apparel in a more sustainable manner, along with the need for consumers to consume fashion in a more mindful and conscious manner as a two fold strategy to make the fashion industry more responsible. She also highlights the need for consumers to fall in love with their clothes - for them to be able to take care of them and ensure that they last long.

Changing the world through fashion- Eva Kruse 

About the talk:

Eva Kruse is the CEO and President of Danish Fashion Institute and Copenhagen Fashion Week. She is also board member of several organizations and companies among them for instance: Nordic Fashion Association, Wonderful Copenhagen and Birger Christensen. She talks about what every one of us can do to improve our personal footprint and the environmental and social impact of the fashion industry.

Grow your own clothes- Suzanne Lee

About the talk:

Designer Suzanne Lee shares her experiments in growing a kombucha-based material that can be used like fabric or vegetable leather to make clothing. The process is fascinating, the results are beautiful (though there's still one minor drawback ...) and the potential is simply stunning.

Sustainability through a circular economy- Maayke Damen

About the talk:

Mike Dongelmans' talk focuses on changes within the fashion industry and the shift to sustainably produced clothing. "Mud Jeans" produce and sell sustainable everyday fashion made of environmentally friendly, organic (GOTS certified), or recycled cotton with the goal to change the fashion industry to become circular, sustainable and ethical. They offer a total sustainable concept that they hope will attract new customer groups and upgrade the fashion chain stores’ environmental profile as well as stimulate the garment industry in general to adopt a circular economy approach and ecological Fairtrade products.
